GoldLink Talks with XXL About New Album

AATWDT

And After That, We Didn’t Talk, GoldLink’s debut album is out now. Last week, the DMV and Soulection rapper sat down with XXL (which named him a Freshman earlier this year) about the album’s influences and the creative process. What was the biggest influence? Women, of course. As GoldLink put it, his main influence was his “relationships with women. Because that’s what shapes me into the man I am.” In addition to women, GoldLink talked working with Rick Rubin, Soulection “the sound of tomorrow,” and how he’s changed for the better. He also used the opportunity to share the artwork for the album and the tracklist– what a busy guy!

Soon after, Goldlink released two of the tracks off the album to the public, "Dark Skinned Woman" and "New Black". The first is an ode to women, accompanied by big band sound and jovial groove. Listen to it here along with a brief interview by Annie Mac.

"New Black" tells a story of the struggle we've seen go down a million and one ways. It's got a lighthearted sound that's easy to get into, with lyrics that are arresting and smoothly delivered. Goldlink has successfully blown up the anticipation for his release on Friday.

GoldLink – Spectrum

If you're not familiar with <a href="http://scoremoreshows.com/?s=goldlink"target="_blank">GoldLink</a>, it's time to get on it. The DMV rapper/Soulection artist has finally announced his debut LP, <em>And After That, We Didn't Talk</em>, which is due out November 13th. He also dropped the lead single "Spectrum" which sounds like everything that is good about Soulection. Just like <a href="http://scoremoreshows.com/goldlink-movin-on-feat-louie-lastic/"target="_blank">one of his earlier singles</a> from this year, GoldLink used a killer '90s hip-hop sample; this one's from Missy Elliott, and it couldn't go more perfectly with the rest of the song. If this is what we have to look forward to for the rest of the album, we're in for a banger. Moral of the story: don't sleep on GoldLink. Listen to "Spectrum" below. You can preorder <em>And After That, We Didn't Talk</em> on iTunes <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/and-after-that-we-didnt-talk/id1045700450"target="_blank">here</a>.

GoldLink – Sober Thoughts [Video]

“Been thinking about getting this tatt’ all on my face / Who gives a f@$%, nobody get to see me anyway.” Ah, the joys of being an anonymous rapper. GoldLink could be in this Shomi Patwary-directed video for “Sober Thoughts” and we wouldn’t even know. What we do know is that the video is a … Continue reading GoldLink – Sober Thoughts [Video]

Mala Luna Music Festival Presents: Sango

MALA_1080X1080_SANGO

Here’s a description of Sango’s music in a few words: it’s a mix of everything you love and everything you don’t know you love yet. The Seattle-born producer loves to mix your favorite 90s and 2000s hip-hop and R&B with his own creative instrumentals and… Brazilian baile funk. Sango’s Brazil-inspired Da Rocinha series has gained massive attention, most notably for the wildly popular track “Agorinha.” Since Sango’s name comes from a female character in a Japanese manga series, it shouldn’t be hard to figure out that he loves mixing in international influences. The rare ingredients he mixes together complement each other tremendously; his 229,000 SoundCloud followers can back him up on that.

Sango is no stranger to music festivals; he’s held spots at Coachella, Electric Forest, and earlier this year, Broccoli City. He’s also done countless shows with the rest of his crew from Soulection, the buzzworthy, LA-based producer and DJ collective known for its futuristic sounds, heavy SoundCloud fan base, and Beats 1 radio show.

Aside from his Da Rocinha series, Sango is known for his collaborations with artists like JMSN, Tinashe, and fellow Soulection member GoldLink. His debut album North was released in 2013 and includes the track “Middle of Things, Beautiful Wife” which features frequent collaborator Xavier Omar. He and Xavier Omar also put out a project called Hours Spent Loving You earlier this year.

What’s a Sango live show like? He spoke to Vibe earlier this year about his process.

“I have a set up and in that set up I have my main songs that I’ll play. Then, I have a side library from like literally each city, so when I go to a region I’m already prepared with what moves them.”

It will be very interesting to see what this means for a Texas show. Sango has been known to mix in Timbaland instrumentals, Outkast vocals, and even old Immature samples into his beats, so San Antonio most likely has some delightful surprises to look forward to during his set later this month.
