2015 was the year of music. Artists were dropping music left and right, changing the way the game is played and how the game is seen in general. Few, if any, did it like Kendrick Lamar did, though. Lamar and To Pimp A Butterfly are sitting mighty high with 11 Grammy nominations, even without copious amounts of radio airtime. Opinions aside, there’s no denying that the album was dark and brutally honest about K. Dot’s home life and his subsequent struggles with success.

In a recent interview with NPR, Kendrick opens up about the first time he witnessed a murder, how he struggled to reconcile his budding prosperity with the poverty his loved ones were experiencing, and his constant stream of self-awareness as he vows to avoid to be part of the problem of perpetual violence.
