Due to unbelievably high demand, Kendrick Lamar and Top Dawg Entertainment have decided to put more tickets on sale for tonight’s Dallas stop of the 1st Annual Kunta’s Groove Sessions at Gilley’s. The show will be moving from the Music Hall to the Ballroom (the show is still at the same venue, just a different room). While Kendrick’s touring on his intimate “Kunta’s Groove Sessions” 12-stop tour, he took the time out to give us the video for one of the best cuts off of To Pimp A Butterfly. The lyrics behind “These Walls” are rich with symbolism and elements of something not-subtly sinister. In the video, though, Kendrick takes us to a party with lots of females, colors, and a few special guests (TERRY CREWS IS LEGEND). Most importantly, K Dot hit the Quan and showed us all how it’s done.
To Pimp A Butterfly has been one of the most well reviewed albums this year. The “back to basics” approach gives soul to K-Dot‘s lyrics. This new use of live instruments has earned the respect of musicians from every domain. His incredible groovy album has been well received by a diverse background of fans, including our nation’s Orchestra. The National Symphony Orchestra took the stage of The John F. Kennedy center in Washington D.C to help Kendrick perform the soulful ballad “These Walls”. You can watch the beautiful rendition below.
Dr. Dre’s new album Compton has everyone talking, but not necessarily about the Doctor. Actually, everyone seems more preoccupied with some suspected shade coming from Kendrick Lamar in his features on Dre’s album. The recipient of that shade? None other than Drake.
After giving his fans an impactful visual with “Alright,” Kendrick clowned out in “For Free? (Interlude). With no apologies, he manifested one of the most outlandish character of his album: the ratchet girlfriend. He didn’t stop there. With the jazzy ensemble, he made us scat along the best we could with his rapid-firing wit. The cartoonish band and costumes make the video too damn funny not to watch. Catch the show below.
We’ve all been waiting for this one. Although music critics (self-proclaimed or otherwise) have been trying to label Kendrick Lamar’s latest release To Pimp A Butterfly as a “classic,” the album is more of a thinker than a club banger. Kendrick brought funk and soul back into hip-hop with this project, and his lyrics and ideas are the most provocative and talked about since, well, his last album, but TPAB doesn’t really have tracks a DJ can play to hype up a party crowd. “Alright” is a notable exception. Especially amongst the album’s relevant, yet almost somber themes, “Alright” is an oasis of light, hope and dope beats. The black and white visuals to go along with this already beloved track were teased for weeks and finally released today. Striking images of Kendrick’s city, good and bad, are shown to reiterate the ideas of the song: bad things happen that we can’t control, but we’ll be alright. “We hate po’ po'” is acted out with the constant threat of police violence, but Kendrick also highlighted his smiling fellow Black Hippy members, classic images of hip-hop in its purest form, and members of his community just singing along and having a good time. An unreleased track was leaked on the internet that almost made it on his freshman album Good Kid m.A.A.d City. The track features Lady Gaga. if you didn’t know, that’s a pretty huge deal.
