President Obama Names a Kendrick Lamar Song as his 2015 Favorite

KennedyHonors

Barack Obama is definitely the coolest president we”ve ever had. He sings Al Green songs, he”s brushed his shoulders off, he stars in Buzzfeed videos, he makes Spotify playlists… and now he”s told People magazine that his favorite song of 2015 was Kendrick Lamar”s “How Much A Dollar Cost.” Really?! That wasn”t even a single. The President is out here listening to K Dot deep cuts like the rest casino online of us rap fans. FLOTUS Michelle Obama also revealed her favorite song, “Uptown Funk,” which proves she is just like every other (lovable!) mom in America. This presidential pick has to be icing on top of this week”s cake for Kendrick, who also had the leading number of Grammy nominations this year – 11 total. “Get it all, you deserve it, Kendrick.” See more highlights from the People interview with the Obamas here.

2016 Grammy Nominations

Nominees

Feel sorry for anyone who tried to release a new single/project today; today’s buzz was all about the Grammy nominations. Particularly because of recent upsets in rap categories (Macklemore over Kendrick, Iggy even being nominated, etc.) rap fans have been on edge for the past couple of years about nominations and winners. This year however, people seem generally pleased. Seemingly to make up for a past snub, although actually just because of a fantastic album, Kendrick Lamar leads everyone with a stunning 11 nominations. That’s not just in the rap categories; Kendrick has more nominations than any other artist this year, with Taylor Swift and The Weeknd unsurprisingly coming in next with 7 each.

Other notable nominees include Flying Lotus (of course featuring Kendrick Lamar) for Best Dance Recording with “Never Catch Me,” and Kehlani and The Internet, each with nominations for best Urban Contemporary album. Kehlani’s nom is especially impressive considering the fact that You Should Be Here is technically a mixtape. Hiatus Kaiyote (!), Jeremih, and of course The Weeknd stand out in the Best R&B Performance category, and everything you’d expect to appear in the rap categories is pretty much covered. One surprise is Drake’s “Back To Back” for Best Rap Performance, which felt like just an Internet-hyped diss track. Apparently the Academy felt differently. Perhaps the most difficult category for hip-hop fans is Best Rap Album. We don’t talk enough about how incredible this year was for rap music. Forest Hills Drive. IYRTITL. To Pimp A Butterfly got rave reviews from pretty much every publication. Anything Nicki Minaj spits is fire. And a Dr. Dre comeback after 15 years?! Much deserved for every artist nominated, and it’s going to be a tough one. Let’s just hope that unlike last year, the rap categories are televised. These artists have had way too much of an impact on 2015 to not be recognized. Check the rest of the nominees here. The Grammy Awards will be held on February 15th, 2016.

Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole- “Black Friday”

kendrick-cole

The hip-hop world is waiting with baited breath for the rumored collaboration between K. Dot and J. Cole. Since a popular J. Cole fan page tweeted an alleged album cover for their collaborative work Reminiscing, the internet has been running wild with speculations. So far, there has been no word of affirmation or denial from either party. If the gods bless us, we will soon have this mixtape.

In the meantime, Cole and Kendrick took Black Friday by a storm. Each artist remixed the other’s top hit off their latest album drops. J. Cole took Kendrick’s anthem “Alright” and gave it a spin of his own. Cole hints at a mysterious drop in February.

Then Kendrick dabbed on J Cole’s dark “Tale of Two Citiez.” What ensues cannot be accurately described in this writer’s words.  Listen below and have the fire extinguisher handy.

Kendrick Lamar- “These Walls” [video]

While Kendrick’s touring on his intimate “Kunta’s Groove Sessions” 12-stop tour, he took the time out to give us the video for one of the best cuts off of To Pimp A Butterfly. The lyrics behind “These Walls” are rich with symbolism and elements of something not-subtly sinister. In the video, though, Kendrick takes us to a party with lots of females, colors, and a few special guests (TERRY CREWS IS LEGEND). Most importantly, K Dot hit the Quan and showed us all how it’s done.

Kendrick Lamar Throws Shade at Drake on Compton Album

drakevskendrick

Dr. Dre’s new album Compton has everyone talking, but not necessarily about the Doctor. Actually, everyone seems more preoccupied with some suspected shade coming from Kendrick Lamar in his features on Dre’s album. The recipient of that shade? None other than Drake.

The lyrics from two songs on the album suggest that Meek Mill isn’t the only one taking some shots at Jimmy.

On “Darkside/Gone” Kendrick raps:

“You scared of my heist now/But still I got enemies giving me energy/I wanna fight now/Subliminals sending me all of this hate/I thought I was holding the mic down”

And on “Deep Water” he raps:

“They liable to bury him/They nominated six to carry him/They worry him to death but he no vegetarian/The beef is on his breath inheritin’ the drama like better than a Great White/Nigga, this is life in my aquarium!”

Lamar’s use of the words energy and the six reference songs on Drake’s If Your Reading This It’s Too Late. Drizzy has yet to drop any diss tracks or even show signs of noticing the shade. We’ll have to wait and see how this beef stews.

Outside of the drama, the album is as lit as expected. You can purchase Compton here and listen for yourself.

Kendrick Lamar- “For Free? (Interlude)

Kendrick-Lamar-Skyrockets-to-Top-of-Artist-100-FDRMX

After giving his fans an impactful visual with “Alright,” Kendrick clowned out in “For Free? (Interlude). With no apologies, he manifested one of the most outlandish characters of his album: the ratchet girlfriend. He didn’t stop there. With the jazzy ensemble, he made us scat along the best we could with his rapid-firing wit. The cartoonish band and costumes make the video too damn funny not to watch. Catch the show below.

Kendrick Lamar – Alright [Video]

Alright

We’ve all been waiting for this one. Although music critics (self-proclaimed or otherwise) have been trying to label Kendrick Lamar’s latest release To Pimp A Butterfly as a “classic,” the album is more of a thinker than a club banger. Kendrick brought funk and soul back into hip-hop with this project, and his lyrics and ideas are the most provocative and talked about since, well, his last album, but TPAB doesn’t really have tracks a DJ can play to hype up a party crowd. “Alright” is a notable exception. Especially amongst the album’s relevant, yet almost somber themes, “Alright” is an oasis of light, hope and dope beats. The black and white visuals to go along with this already beloved track were teased for weeks and finally released today. Striking images of Kendrick’s city, good and bad, are shown to reiterate the ideas of the song: bad things happen that we can’t control, but we’ll be alright. “We hate po’ po'” is acted out with the constant threat of police violence, but Kendrick also highlighted his smiling fellow Black Hippy members, classic images of hip-hop in its purest form, and members of his community just singing along and having a good time. Watch below.
